CDS stands for Combined Defense Services examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy.Every year, a huge number of applicants apply for UPSC CDS Exam and selection of the candidates made up on the basis of written exam, physical round and personal interview round. In This article, we are providing UPSC CDS Exam Pattern 2016 with the detailed syllabus.

Union Public Service Commission or UPSC Conducts Combined Defense Service (CDS Exam) twice in a year. CDS Exam Syllabus covered in three Subjects Papers English, General Knowledge & Elementary Mathematics.Candidates who had applied for the Officers Training Academy (OTA) they will face only for Two Papers English & General Knowledge. The exam pattern of UPSC CDS details given below:

PAPER – 1: English
This part will consist questions from Spotting errors, Fill in the blank – Cloze Test,Idioms & Phrases, Synonyms and antonyms,Reconstruction of sentence & passage, One word substitution, Phrase substitution, Jumbled up sentences, Double blanks in a sentence, Commonly misspelled words, Comprehension passages, Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Pronouns, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Agreement, Articles, Modals, Phrasal Verbs.
PAPER – 2: General Knowledge
Important days/dates, Currency and capital, Ministers and their departments, Indian Economy & International Economy, Budget, Census, Head of the organizations, World countries and their capital, Awards & Honors, Sports
The Paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of nature which Candidate should be able to answer without special study.
PAPER – 3: Elementary Mathematics
Algebra: Basic Operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M. Theory of polynomials, Solutions of quadratic equations, the relation between its roots and coefficients, Set language and set notation, rational expressions and conditional identities, Laws of indices, quadratic equations in one variable & their solutions.
Arithmetic: Number System: Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers, Fundamental Operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, Square, roots, Decimal, fractions, Time and Distance, Time and Work, Percentages, Applications to Simple and Compound interest, Profit and Loss, Ratio and Proportion
Elementary Number Theory: Division algorithm, Prime, and composite numbers, Tests of divisibility by 2, 3,4,5,9 and 11, Multiples and factors, Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables.
Geometry: Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Theorems on Properties of angles at a Point,Parallel lines, Sides and angles of a triangle, Congruency of triangles,Similar triangles, Concurrence of medians and altitudes, Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square, Circles and its properties including tangents and normal.
Mensuration: Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circle. Areas of figures which Can be split up into these figures (Field Book), Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders, surface area and Volume of spheres.
Trigonometry: Sine x, cosine x, Tangent x when 0 Values of sin x, cos x, and tan x, for x = 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90, Simple trigonometric identities, Use of trigonometric tables, Simple cases of heights and distances.
Statistics: Collection and tabulation of statistical data, Graphical representation, frequency Polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts etc. Measures of central tendency.
